i dont know what happened to harlsom, I just guess he isnt so active these days. I rarely see him on qw servers. Reload on the other hand has been duelling on qw servers more and more frequently. Hopefully he will participate in the next AUSQW duel comp (which is currently being organised).

very competitive series:) i am so out-of-touch with the au duel scene; the last time i saw venom play was in that very entertaining ffa mvd on q1edge. good hearing about reload's recent activity.

btw, if you love humorous games you will get a chuckle out of some of the events in the dm2 game:P check out sparky's rj from under the platform by the health to the ra at /demo_jump 1:20 or so; a very subtle, practical and quick move. i can't recall seeing def or para doing that in recent games (correct me if i am off the mark). if you consider that, it is astonishingly skillful because i am given to understand dm6 is rarely played in the .au?
i was very surprised by the aero game...what a match. too bad the qhlan won't use the map as a platform for the duel tourney...but i understand why:/

ok one last thing. not sure how i keep screwing up this post:/

the ztndm3 demo really shows how the map is to be played when you get 200/200 vs 150/100. no wonder that it is a popular and accepted standard map in the .au, for they just know how to play the map when you get the lameass 150/100. perhaps ztndm3 really does belong in the big5 of dueling maps?? (dm2,4,6,aero,ztndm3)

i cannot see the RJ you are talking about xhrl... is it on dm2 or dm6???

I think it is dm2

when u have just killed venom, u rj from big room, and use another RJ (this is the one xhrl means) up the stairs, keeping your speed up.

xhrl: I agree with what you say about ztndm3. I've always regarded ztndm3 as a great duel map. It should definately be among tb5 for duels!

Aerowalk demo is great! GG Venom

IMO skull is better then dm4; dm2 is good, but some items should be replaced to make this map more balanced

saying that skull is better than dm4 doesnt say much since any map is better than dm4 actually :)

xhrl refers to dm6 i think dkure, as spark does a funky rj back from under the platform to the ra at about that time in the demo.

#16: yeah especially since def/para are most known for dm6 tricks, not dm2 (xhrl's references...)

i think xhrl is doing too much cocaine lately

I wanted to write a comment on this series. But then I remembered that I never wanted to criticize a demo on CHTV, so I'll not do it.

I personally think it should just be the big 3 of dm2,dm4,dm6 but if people are going to be insistant on playing custom maps then i say make it aerowalk and skull....

I am not sure what logic would want you to keep dm2 and remove dm4.... dm2 is just complete cs..... especially in europe!

games on dm2 are interesting to play and watch, except those moments when players keep their asses in room with mega-ra... it's really boring and unbalanced, so, i think, ra should be removed from the room with ssg.. it means there would be 2 megas and 1 ra between them; a player would hold his mega, and then he will move out to fight for ra, coz it's seems to be a little harder to stay in a room with 200/0 :)
Yes, dm4 is fast and furious :) but a person who kills his opponent once on that map and still has 70 health and 100 armor, kills him ten times more in 50 seconds.. so i think it's not competitive at all.. and there's no point to take mega coz u have 10% chance to get alive to tele..

PS: that's my IMO and ohh plz forgive me my english :))

Borada - that's what makes dm4, dm4 you either have what it takes to win on it or you don't, stuff this balance shit, why must everything be balanced...make a player work the higher ground instead of it just becoming an aiming contest, if u want balance play povdmm4 or some crap

BTW everything IS balanced in this world allready :) it means dm4 is balanced with skull :)

PS i'm BorOda, not Borada :)

i have seen extreme dm2-style camp even on dm4 (sitting in mh room for 2 minutes, then spawning at ra sitting there until the guy spams you out of it and then running to mh and sitting there again... sound familiar? hint qhlan3..)

so i dont think it depends on the map

so yeah, dm2 is just as good a map as dm4!

I think that more custom maps should be used, but there are ways to do it while still concentrating on a core of maps for the most important matches.

For instance, you could set it up so that in each round, each player picks a map from the list, the third (if necessary) being randomly selected from those they didn't pick. After each round, the least-picked map or maps from the previous round would be dropped from the list for the next round. So you could start off with more maps, perhaps as many as 10-12, but still end up with only 3-5 to choose from for the finals. There would be more variety in early rounds (and in practice matches) but the most important matches would still be decided on the most popular maps.

The thing is, there are so many great maps available now. In the early days of Quake, there really were just dm2/dm4/dm6, maybe e1m2, and if you extended the choices to more maps, you might randomly end up on dm1 or e4m7 or something... (One old U.S. netquake clan match I saw ended up randomly on e1m8! That was fun to watch!)

But now (and since years ago, really) there are all the great Headshot and ztn and Ghandi and frib and peej and everyone else's maps. The best remaining review site that I know that covers only good maps is Peekaboom's Prominence at http://www.planetquake.com/peek/ Most maps there are at least pretty good in one way or another.

Here's my short list of other suggestions for duel maps (in addition to common ones like aerowalk, ztndm3, ztndm5 and skull):

dead (dead bodies everywhere) by Headshot
efdm7 (biohazard) by Frib
spineV2 by Headshot
strafin3 (one man army) by Peej
rapture1 (imminent boom) by Danimal
jvoxdm2 (Jackie Brown) by Jvox
naked4 (my parents don't like you) by Gandhi
pinion1 (dissonance) by Retinal
aggressor by Tyrann

While I'd never want serious matches played on anything other than really great maps, I also think seeing JUST dm2/dm4/dm6, some aerowalk and a little ztndm3 gets a bit stale. There are other maps just as good out there, and I'd like to see more games (and demos) on them! Some of them also play a lot differently and I like the variety. (The Beatdown LAN parties in Los Angeles always used to have their QW tournaments on great maps: ztndm3, ztndm4, ztndm5, aerowalk, efdm5, naked3...some cool demos there, Kornelia kicking Reptile's ass, Kornelia kicking CRT's ass...)
