'waste of life...is this game still being played...move on newbies,,' - almost the smartest thing ever said here. first, waste of life. posting that in a demo comment about a game that u think is a waste of time? now _that_ is a waste of time, atleast kov got 500$(?) for winning. and move on newbies? another stupid comment without thought; we have been playing this game since 96, the qw community is the least newbie-community there can be. well done from my namesake.

Kovaak's shaft aim was dead on.

Flinty: there are 8 demos because Kovaak came from the Losers Bracket and had to beat Def twice in two Best of 5s.

Yeah, I think that was the biggest factor in Kov's victory. He just plain out LG'D Def.

nerves of steel decided this

def is usually the least nervous of all north american qw players that i spec.. and i've seen kovaak get quite nervous in official games before.

but these games it was quite the other way around.. kovaak was just in the zone, and i think i saw some spots of nervousness from defs play.

still quite close and yet quite convincing

Congrats to KovaaK on a much deserved victory.

P.S. I wasn't nervous at all, KovaaK simply has the better aim, especially with the LG.

Congrats to both Def and Kovaak. I totally agree with Moris(10). These games had all the signature plays you could hope for in a grand finale.

I'm really looking forward to seeing more games from Kovaak especially now that he has won this tournament. I expect the extra boost in confidence is all he needs to continue to play at his freakish skill level from here on out.

I was disappointed to not see Yogic, FienD and Immy in this tournament. Their involvement would have brought about much more high-caliber action to the tournament.

The first dm6 was intense, and a lot of luck at the end by one of the players! The second dm6 was also intense, nice last minute.

some really good games. yeah, kov's shaft was locked on in these matches. gg to both!

oneshotflinch: yes it would've been nice to see those guys playing. but i don't think they are playing qw at all. yogic is unbeatable in his 'zone'; ask def or kov, they'll tell you how it is. the guy i'd love to see come out of retirement is xyster!!!

the dm6 games were great to watch (dm6 being na's clear forte), you see some awesome tactics come out and the identical pings made for a good even playing field.

but yeah the money was given to charity without xyster being in the comp... he would have taken all 3 placings... sort of like what chuck norris does in karate

It would seem that any demos that were on the cha-tv database were removed (maybe expired) Steek, Jester and FienD knows who he is ;) They were in clan [5] together. They must have some demos of him. Last reports were of him quiting in 2000 from what I can gather:

http://www.challenge-smackdown.com/archive/season1/na/divindex.php3?load=commentform.php3&pageid=1282&aid=6745

It would be very interesting if he made a reappearance to the scene. One thing I like a lot about this guy is what Steek had to say about him:

"Xyster may have left but he did leave us with a lot of valuable teamplay skills. He took most of us and turned us each into one of him. Yes believe it or not [5] may have lost one Xyster but, 5 New Xysters have been created!"

Someone has got to have a demo of this guy. It would be a real tragedy if someone this good was to be completely forgotten. I mean other than a few scant reports there's no real proof this guy ever actually existed as phil pointed out.

xyster -A surgical instrument for scraping bones.

Through the few scant reports and comments available this is what I have come up with.

xyster probably first appeared sometime around early to mid 2000. Many people believed he was D11-Thresh even though he denied their accusations. He signed up with clan [5] in a Challenge.Smackdown.North.America tournament which he later quit stating:
"I know I was the valuable to [5], but I have reached my goal 'quakeworlds #1', so there is nothing else I have to prove, good luck in the future [5]"

Here's some random comments made about xyster from the Smackdown news articles covering the tournament:

"Xyster is so lethal with the quad he has been known to frag spectators."

"On a final note, [5]Xyster has asked me to tell all the people on IRC that he is not accepting 1v1 challenges. He is very serious about preparing for the tournament, and was flooded with messages on IRC last night. He would also like to dispel the rumors going around IRC and the net that he is Thresh aliasing. He isn't."

"we came together with one purpose: to beat xyster. Now that he is out of the tournament, it seems pointless to continue. We spent every waking hour discussing how to contain him (since you can't hope to stop him). Now that he is gone, we have no reason to play."

"Tomorrow night, midnight eastern standard time is the deadline for adding players ... you want to add people, you want to remove people, you want to change you knick from [5]Xyster to D11-Thresh, whatever :) I need to have an e-mail by midnight saturday with roster changes."

"Finally you need at least 4 people to make a team. Xyster said he doesn't need teammates and wanted to enter as a 1 man army. Although he probably could lock dm3 against most teams by himself, you need at least 4 people to make a team and a maximum of 12."

"Please make an effort to prepare for this tourney.. that means setup qizmo properly..and practice teamplay (not FFA or CA) or else you'll find yourself spectating! i quit - xy '

[5] seemed to have a lock on the tourney. Xyster was to [5] as Michael Jordan was to the bulls. Can team [5] regroup? The early scoop is that Xyster was missing some practices and in 1 scrimmage got less than 100 frags (he got 97). Heated words were exchanged between teammates after the game, and the rest is history. Expect a stunning interview with Xyster to be posted later this week."

"Xyster is a 1v1 qw legend. He is considered by some to be the best dueler in the world now. He gets constantly pestered by wannabes on irc trying to make a name for themselves in the 1v1 scene. When they ask for a duel he has a standard response: 'Send me a demo of you beating Thresh in a 1v1. If its good, I MIGHT play you. Otherwise quit wasting my time. I don't duel newbies.'"

Flames Part II
Cha-TV Article By: zzjohnzz on 2004-04-11 08:58:00

"After all the arguing and fighting, when the dust settles and the smoke clears, who is the best of all time? The answer is simple:

[5]XysteR and [5]

The greatest of all time."

Smackdown Comments to articles:

"xyster = thresh"

"xyster is thresh under alias."

"Xyster is gone but the momentum is still there!

Yes its unfortunate to see Xyster leave. Long conversations on trying to keep him with us didn't pay off. He quoted "I know I was the valuable to [5], but I have reached my goal 'quakeworlds #1', so there is nothing else I have to prove, good luck in the future [5]". Xyster, where going to miss you.
Xyster may have left but he did leave us with a lot of valuable teamplay skills. He took most of us and turned us each into one of him. Yes believe it or not [5] may have lost one Xyster but, 5 New Xysters have been created!" -steekzor

um.. it all sounds like its quite "tongue in cheek" the fact that there are no accomplishments by this xyster anywhere mean either a) he really was an alias b) all of those quotes are baloney

#38:
oneshotflinch
Well he certainly was an alias, it's just there's no proof to who he is and if anyone knew for certain they haven't wanted to come forward about it.

As I pointed out the evidence seems points strongly that this guy was only "xyster" for a short period of time. Probably a timeframe only ranging from 2-6 months.

Ah, haha, it really was Hagge then :P

That makes sense, but what's funny still from the research I did, is people were really convinced that this xyster guy was really good. (i guess hype even when comedic can do that). For example xhrl wrote this in response to one of zzJohnzz's articles:

2. xhrl on 2004-04-27
another classic zj article... thanks john.
do you think xyster was a superior quad runner to haze on dm3, zj?

There's also a number of other comments by people disputing if this "xyster" guy was thresh. People were really convinced this guy was good. lol?

Anyways thanks for letting us know def.

This is some of the funniest lines I've ever read on Ch-TV:

"Xyster is so lethal with the quad he has been known to frag spectators."

"Xyster said he doesn't need teammates and wanted to enter as a 1 man army. Although he probably could lock dm3 against most teams by himself, you need at least 4 people to make a team and a maximum of 12."

"When they ask for a duel he has a standard response: 'Send me a demo of you beating Thresh in a 1v1. If its good, I MIGHT play you. Otherwise quit wasting my time. I don't duel newbies.'"

Hilarious.
